    President’s Corner December 2015

    Fellow Skalleagues,

2015 has been a fantastic year of spectacular events, topped off with our Holiday Party December 14th at the T Pepin Hospitality Centre with our generous host Andy Brouillard. Thank you Andy for the open bar, decorations, entertainment, scrumptious dinner and even Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus! Special thanks as well for Steven Rodriguez and Sarah Bertran for putting the evening together with over 30 silent auction items and well over 100 bottles of wine for the “wine pull” which were beautifully presented. I hope everyone agrees that this is a fun and successful way to boost our club’s travel budget. Between the “pull” and the auction we grossed $5,640.00!  Thanks to everyone who participated and donated!

SPECIAL REQUEST:  Please send in your 2016 SKAL DUES as soon as possible if you have not already done so. Contact me or Steven if you have any questions or changes before the year end.

Past President Dan Peretz led the opening Skal toast after which introductions were made. I was happy to announce our January 11, 2016 dinner will be at the Salt Rock Grill at Indian Shores. That is the night of the National Championship game so we will wrap it up quickly for those who do not want to miss it.  I announced the wonderful travel opportunities coming up with the Skal International World Congress which will be in Monaco in 2016 and India in 2017!  I encourage everyone to take a look at our Young Skal page on our website.  We recognized our Young Skal member, Masterson Dempsey, who was recently elected “King of St. Leo University”.  Please be thinking of a Young Skal candidate to bring to a future dinner. I announced the results of the SIUSA election, John Mavros from Orange Coast is the new President and Holly Powers from Boston is the new VP of Administration.

Let me tell you, the table settings by Puff & Stuff Catering were extravagant and the passed hors d’ouvres were delicious during the reception. Andy’s son and a brass ensemble from Freedom High School serenaded us with holiday songs during the reception. Course #1 was “Pine and Popcorn”- a rosemary infused English pea puree with brown butter popcorn crunch.  In honor of Frank Sinatra’s 100th birthday, Andy arranged entertainer Don Juceam to croon a few standards during the evening.

Course #2 was a creative grilled Raddichio with sweetened grapefruit, smoked pistachios and a mustard vinaigrette.  Course #3 was XX Quail, roasted and stuffed with a blackberry cornbread paired with a pan seared scallop, salsify puree and a smoked gastrique.  Course #4 “Grow Up” was house made vanilla ice cream with sesame brittle candle…..yum!

Grand “thanks” to Andy, Chef and the staff that kept our wine glasses full!  Jim Schalk provided some favors of his tasty “Toffee to Go” for each guest.  I encourage everyone to take a look at the photos on the website (Andy even provided a photographer for the evening and for special pictures with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Clause after dinner).  It was my honor to give the closing Skal toast with a special wish for a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!

    President’s Corner September 2015

    Fellow Skalleagues,

We met in September at the newly renovated Hilton Downtown in their stylish Restaurant 211.

Thanks to our hostess for the evening Frances Ramirez.  The hors d’oeuvres were fantastic, especially the flat breads!  The board of directors recognized Colette Florido with our first Skal Baby Shower (she is due at the end of September) at the end of our board meeting.

Tim Coultas opened the dinner with the Skal toast. We welcomed several guests and potential members:  Mike Falconer the DOS of Le Meridien, Kimberly Scafidi-Sullivan the DOSM of Jackson’s Bistro, Tyler Scarborough with Network Limousines and Kaila Sanders from St Leo College… along with a few “better halves”.

The Hilton served a delicious dinner with choice of lobster bisque or cucumber carpaccio salad, French Cut Chicken with truffle potato puree and seasonal vegetables. A classic NY style cheesecake with raspberry coulis was the final touch!

We gave our appreciation to Roberta Blum for the planning of the enjoyable membership recruitment reception at Ulele on August 27th.  After our golf rain out in July, I was delighted to announce our October 12th dinner will be back at Belleair Country Club (Host Ed Shaughnessy).  Dan Peretz gave a brief recap of the SIUSA National Committee Meeting which he attended in August. Tampa member Mark Hubbard will be attending the Skal International Congress in Malaga, Spain in October. Members were reminded what great travel opportunities are available with Skal.  Our Salute to Tourism will be on Thursday, November 12th. Mark your calendars as we will again be at the Tampa Convention Center.  Rick Hamilton and staff promise as memorable of an evening as we enjoyed last year. Also, coming up on Monday, December 14th is our Holiday Celebration, Wine Pull and Silent Auction at Andy Brouilliard’s TPepin’s Hospitality Centre!

Members were reminded to please “like” the Skal Tampa Bay Facebook page and to “check-in” on occasion.  Members were also encouraged to let George or Steven know if they have any interest in serving on the Board of Directors in the upcoming year as the nominating committee will meet soon.

Also let us know if you would be willing to serve on the Salute to Tourism committee or the Christmas/Auction committee.

Please start collecting wine to donate for December ($10 minimum retail value) which you can bring to the October and November dinners.  We also encourage donations of room, attraction, services and restaurant certificates for the auction in December.

Congratulations to Oliver and Allison Kugler who won the 50/50 drawing ($105).  Tyler Scarborough won four passes to Dali, Colette and Tim won Hubbard’s excursion certificates and dinner for 2 at the Tradewind’s “Palm Court” was won by Dan Peretz.  John Heather from St. Leo College led our closing Skal toast.  Thanks to everyone that attended a very enjoyable evening.

    President’s Corner June 2015

    Fellow Skalleagues,

Downtown St. Petersburg is a real treat these days, and we were delighted to experience 400 Beach Drive Seafood and Tap House!  Although owner, Steve Westphal, was touring the west coast and unable to attend; John Reutz and Travis Zalewski stepped up as our hosts for our June 8th dinner meeting.  We were joined by guests, John Heather and two potential Young SKAL candidates; Masterson Dempsey and Raisa Alstodt, from the St. Leo Hospitality School. David Merklinger from the Don Cesar, Amy Miller from the Salvador Dali, Brent Pope from Emerald Greens Condo Resort,  Barbara Readey from the Renaissance Vinoy, Beth Sparling from Honeymoons and Beyond Travel and another Young SKAL candidate, Lauren Tice from Express Employment Professionals. Welcome to our first time guests. We gave our well wishes and healing vibes to members Chuck Prather and George Glover who are recovering from recent health issues and our condolences to Jim and Chuck Wray as their father C.E. Wray passed the week prior. Also, please keep member Oliver Kugler’s 16 year old step daughter, Elise, in your prayers as she too is facing a serious health challenge.

We enjoyed a starter of goat cheese crab cakes and beef tenderloin skewers followed by their signature salad with orange balsamic dressing.  Stephen Cummings led the opening Skal toast (fellow skaliwags???). 400 Beach offered a choice of three entrée’s.  I enjoyed macadamia nut crusted mahi-mahi, island rice and stir fry vegetables.  Dinner was topped off with a key lime pie tart and a chocolate torte.  Kudos to Chef’s Ana Davis and Luis Quezada Mina and thanks to our servers Trish and Tammy.

Welcome back to past member, Peter Kreuziger (Bon Appetit), who was pinned this evening. Roberta Blum our membership chairperson announced a special reception at Ulele in Tampa on Thursday August 27th from 5:30-7:30 with special invitations to potential members.  Members are welcome to attend and experience Tampa’s hottest restaurant at a cost of $25.00 as this is not part of our regular dues dinners.  Dan Peretz welcomed our Young SKAL candidates and he and his committee are working on expanding Young SKAL.  You are encouraged to visit a new website: www.youngskalnow.org for a global preview!  Laura Lothridge shared highlights of her North American Annual Skal Conference (NAASC) experience in May at Riviera Maya Mexico.

Please highlight the following on your calendars:  The Don Smith Annual Golf Tournament is July 17th at Ed Shaughnessy’s exclusive Belleair Country Club starting at 8:00 am for golfers and everyone can also join us for lunch starting at Noon! August 27th at Ulele for our membership reception at 5:30 p.m. Special SKAL events coming up are our Region IV summer outing- a Bahama Cruise from Miami on August 21-23 and the National Committee Meeting in Las Vegas, August 27-30.  You really should consider these great travel experiences at a wonderful value!

Our lucky winners this fine evening were George Bentley- $130, Dennis Reed- a night and breakfast for two at Renaissance International Plaza, Lauren Tice- a Yacht Starship dinner cruise for two and Sara Bertran- a special Skal bottle of Tequila!  Thanks to all for another special Monday night and to David Dawson who led our closing Skal toast!  Twenty of our guests followed Laura Lothridge to her Smooth C’s motor yacht for an evening cruise just a few steps away!

North American Tourism Executives Assemble for 54th Annual Meeting, Generate Millions in Future Tourism Business, Implement Future Growth Plans The 54th North American Alliance of Skål Clubs (NAASC) 2015 Congress was recently held at the Barceló Resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico May 14-17, 2015 and was generously hosted by Skål International Riviera Maya.

More than 200 Skål International members from the USA, Canada, Mexico convened for this annual regional meeting to discuss various tourism issues as well as to network with each other in an atmosphere of friendship and learning. The elected Skål International President, V. Salih Cene from Skål International Antalya (Turkey) participated in the meeting and presented several updates on Skål International initiatives, including the progress of disaster relief efforts in Nepal and Vanuatu as well as the postponement and relocation of the annual Skål World Congress during his address to the gathered membership.

The North American Alliance of Skål Clubs (NAASC) is a regionalized portion of the largest organization of professional tourism leaders (16,200 members) around the world, promoting global tourism and friendship. It is the only international group uniting all branches of the travel and tourism industry. Its members, the industry's managers and executives, meet at local, national, regional and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest. While, the meeting took on a regionalized theme, there was time in the schedule reserved for each National Committee to focus on its own internal business as well. Skål International USA, with one of its largest contingents in recent years with 45 of its 52 clubs represented, came out of its meetings with a new way forward and a path of action in regards to its marketing efforts as well a sense of purpose and commitment to not only raise the profile of this organization and its component clubs within their respective localities, but also internationally through the development of a new 3-Year Action Plan. "I’m so proud of this organization, its members and our Board," said SIUSA President Martha McClintock. "To come together through the collective efforts of so many in such a short period of time, to develop a plan, and begin to implement it, SKÅL INTERNATIONAL UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A National Committee of Skål International An International Association of Travel and Tourism Professionals

while also enhancing the participation of our membership in the decision making and implementation processes at every level is just awe inspiring." Skål International USA will be participating in National and International Tourism trade shows in 2015 and 2016, including ABA Marketplace and IPW, in addition to state governor’s conferences on Tourism. They will also have a presence at 4 regional Tourism Cares events beginning this fall and into 2016. The assembled delegates also approved plans to help SIUSA further promote local club promotion efforts through budgetary enhancements to its membership development funds and the unveiling of a new revenue generating member benefit as well as the collection and creation of additional online tools to help formulate universally accessible toolkits that can be customized to the needs of the local tourism community. In addition to the successful national committee meetings, delegates enjoyed productive business-to-business networking sessions, travel industry education seminars focused on "Sustainable Tourism in Riviera Maya" and "What Every Hotelier should know about Google: Tips & Trends". The meeting will rotate for 2016 to the United States, and the 55th NAASC Congress will be hosted by Skål International Boise, June 9-11 at the picturesque Riverside Hotel.

"I look forward to continuing to meet as a regional body and coordinate efforts between the other North American National Committees, as there is so much that we can all continue to learn from each other and collectively impact the future of tourism across borders," said McClintock. For 2017, the 56th annual NAASC meeting will be hosted by Skål International Canada.
